Canada immigration site crashes as Donald Trump edges closer to clinching White House win

The official website for Citizen and Immigration Canada stopped working earlier this evening, indicating a huge number of American citizens are looking to leave the country as the results of the presidential race come in.

The site usually offers ways of applying to live in or become a citizen of the country — but those wanting to jump ship have been left disappointed by an error message.

When clicked, the page appears to take a long time to load before redirecting to a white page that reads: “Connection reset by peer.”

Google searches regarding immigration to Canada has skyrocketed over the course of the evening, increasing four times over the hours since the polls closed.

Citizen and Immigration Canada has yet to comment on the outage.

Canada’s immigration website isn’t the only thing Trump’s success appears to have crashed, with markets across the globe heading in the same direction.

Currencies have plummeted as the results have been announced over the evening, with the Mexican peso crashing in value in response to the increasing chance of a Trump victory.

And the consistently stagnant euro has surged more than two per cent against the dollar over the past few hours.
A victory for the billionaire property tycoon now appears all but certain, with Trump taking swing states Ohio, North Carolina and Florida over rival Hillary Clinton’s Virginia win.

The candidates are in a dead heat over Michigan, which would guarantee a seat in the Oval Office for Trump won.

Trump is currently on 265 electoral college votes, while Clinton lags way behind on 218.
